Premiered on Feb 5th, 2019, the first day of the Chinese New Year, Fantawild sixth animated feature Boonie Bears: Blast into the Past continues to draw audiences to theatres. Till Feb. 21th, the film has made an impressive domestic box office of 675 million CNY (over $100 million USD).

Boonie Bears: Blast into the Past follows the bear brothers Briar and Bramble and their friend Vick on their unexpected journey into the primitive age. On their search for the way back to the 21st century, they encounter all kinds of dangers and exotic animals like wild boars, giant turtles, and adorable pandas.

The only fully animated film in cinema this Chinese New Year, Boonie Bears: Blast into the Past ranks the fourth in Chinese box office at this period, outperforming Peppa Pig Celebrates Chinese New Year (a mixed-form film) which has received 122 million CNY (approx. $18 million USD) till this Friday.

Blast into the Past has broken the record set by its predecessor Boonie Bears: The Big Shrink at 605 million CNY, also surpassing the Chinese box office of Kung Fu Panda 2 at 613 million CNY.

The film is rated 9.2 on Maoyan, a major Chinese film rating and ticket purchasing platform. This performance is only second to the Chinese sci-fi blockbuster The Wandering Earth, among all the films released in theatre during the Chinese New Year season.

With this domestic success, the Fantawild team is poised to get bolder on the international front. Last week, the film opened in Singapore on Valentine’s Day at Filmgarde Cineplexes. This is the first time a Boonie Bears movie had a synchronized international release.

In addition, the film has been pre-sold to Canada, Latin America, Malaysia, and Cambodia. Fantawild is also bringing the film and its other range of works to all the major content markets and licensing expos, including Berlinale Film Festival and Kidscreen Summit that just happened, Hong Kong International Film & TV Market, MIPTV, Le Marché du Film in Cannes, Licensing Expo Las Vegas in the upper half of 2019.
